I sensed something was missing in my life, but what? Passion? Adventure? A sense of direction? Self-esteem? I had no clear vision of exactly what.
My Life in the Milonga is a story of self-discovery and finding parts of myself that had been buried for a long time. One day fate took me on a short vacation to Buenos Aires, where I scheduled a few tango lessons. Soon I found myself feeling more alive and open to the world. I had discovered the alluring and captivating world of Argentine tango. Soon my nights were filled with passion, humor and the playful flirting of the milonga.
Buenos Aires, the Mecca of Tango, is a passionate and earthy city. Porteños, the people of Buenos Aires live each day in the present with their emotions on their sleeve. I felt it most in the milongas. Where tango is a dance of human connection, not as a theatrical performance. I felt their passion, joy, love, and even their anger.
Tango and Buenos Aires brought out my passionate and earthy side. For the first time in my life I started living with my emotions on the outside. This also a story of learning to trust others and myself and sharing of piece of myself with my partners, while dancing with an open heart.
Tango is a long journey, mine has just begun. Tango is a challenging mesmerising dance to learn, more so if you want to dance it well. Fortunately, I found a wonderful teacher to guide me towards connecting with my partners and with the music. Today I'm living my childhood dream of travel and becoming more involved with other cultures around the world. Tango has allowed me to become me.
There has not been a night since I started dancing tango, when tango has not reminded me of the importance of living life in the present and of the desire for human connection in all of us. Human connection is the essence of tango. And that is why this thing called Tango speaks so deeply to me and to many others.
